What Is the CBSE Re-Evaluation Process?
If you believe your CBSE Class 10 marks do not reflect your actual performance, you have the right to apply for a formal review. CBSE offers a structured, three-stage process — and every stage must be completed in sequence. There are no shortcuts.
The process begins with a Verification of Marks, where CBSE checks that all answers were evaluated and totals were transferred correctly. If you are still unsatisfied, you can request a Photocopy of your answer sheet to review it yourself. Only after receiving the photocopy can you apply for a full Re-evaluation, where your answers are marked again by a different examiner.
Each stage has its own fee, its own deadline, and its own specific outcome. This guide walks you through all three in full detail.
Verification → Photocopy → Re-evaluation
Each stage unlocks the next. You cannot apply for a photocopy without first completing verification, and you cannot apply for re-evaluation without first obtaining the photocopy. Plan for all three before you begin.
Verification of Marks
Verification is the entry point of the entire re-evaluation system. In this stage, CBSE checks three specific things — and only these three things:
- All answer booklets and additional sheets have been evaluated (no page was skipped by the examiner)
- The marks awarded in each question have been correctly totalled on the cover page of the answer booklet
- The marks on the answer booklet cover page have been correctly transferred to the CBSE marks record system
Verification does not involve re-reading your answers or changing how marks were awarded. It is purely an administrative check for calculation and transfer errors. If an error is found, your marks are corrected and a revised marksheet is issued automatically — you do not need to apply for the next stages.
Obtaining Photocopy of Answer Sheet
Once you have applied for — and received the result of — Verification, you become eligible to request a scanned photocopy of your evaluated answer sheet. This is a critical step because it lets you review exactly what the examiner saw and how they marked your answers.
CBSE will send you a digitised scan of your complete answer booklet, including any additional answer sheets. You can then compare your answers against the official marking scheme to assess whether the examiner's evaluation was correct.
- Compare each answer against the CBSE official marking scheme (available on the CBSE website)
- Identify specific questions where you believe marks were incorrectly awarded or deducted
- Decide which questions are worth challenging in Step 3 — only apply for re-evaluation where you have a strong case
- Consult your subject teacher with the photocopy if you are unsure about specific answers
Re-evaluation of Answers
Re-evaluation is the final and most substantive stage. A different, qualified examiner re-marks the specific questions you have identified, using the same official CBSE marking scheme. This is the only stage where the actual marks awarded for your answers can change.
You specify which questions you want re-evaluated — you do not have to submit the entire paper. Select only the questions where you genuinely believe the marks are wrong based on your review of the photocopy.
- Each question challenged costs ₹100 — choose carefully based on your photocopy review
- If re-evaluation results in higher marks, your marksheet is updated and re-issued, and your re-evaluation fee is refunded
- If re-evaluation results in lower marks, the lower marks stand — this is rare, but possible
- If re-evaluation results in no change, the original marks stand and the fee is not refunded
- The outcome of re-evaluation is final — there is no further appeal within the CBSE system
How Much Does CBSE Re-Evaluation Cost?
The fees below are the estimated standard rates based on CBSE's published schedule. Always verify the exact amounts on cbse.gov.in when the official notification is released, as CBSE may revise fees each year.
| Stage | What You Pay For | Fee | Refundable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step 1 Verification of Marks |
Per subject applied for | ₹500 Per subject |
No |
| Step 2 Photocopy of Answer Sheet |
Per subject applied for | ₹700 Per subject |
No |
| Step 3 Re-evaluation |
Per question challenged | ₹100 Per question |
Yes — if marks increase |
| Minimum Total (all 3 stages, 1 subject, 1 question) | ₹1,300 | Partial | |
📊 Example: Challenging 4 questions in 1 subject through all 3 stages
Payment method: All fees are paid online during the application process on cbse.gov.in. CBSE accepts debit cards, credit cards, and net banking. No demand drafts or cash payments are accepted for re-evaluation applications.
Fee refund for re-evaluation: If your re-evaluation results in even a single mark increase, the entire re-evaluation fee (₹100 × number of questions challenged) is refunded. The verification and photocopy fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome.
When Does the Re-Evaluation Window Open?
CBSE publishes an official notification on cbse.gov.in immediately after results are declared, specifying the exact opening and closing dates for each stage. If you received an E grade (fail) in one or two subjects, you should look at the Compartment Exam guide instead — re-evaluation is only for passed subjects where you believe marks were undercounted. The general pattern is consistent year to year — plan around this schedule.
Where to check exact dates: Visit cbse.gov.in → Examination → Verification, Photocopy & Re-evaluation immediately after results are declared. The official circular will specify day-by-day deadlines for each subject and stage. Dates announced here override any general estimates.
Should You Apply for Re-Evaluation?
Not every student who is disappointed with their result should apply for re-evaluation. Use these criteria to decide whether it makes sense in your situation.
Apply if you have genuine grounds
- Your marks are dramatically lower than your expected score and internal assessment
- A specific question has clearly been left unmarked (skipped by the examiner)
- You can compare your answer against the CBSE marking scheme and identify a specific error
- The difference in marks would change your compartment result to a pass
- The difference would meaningfully improve your stream eligibility percentage
Do not apply just because you're unhappy
- You scored lower than expected but cannot identify a specific examiner error
- You disagree with the marking scheme itself — re-evaluation uses the same scheme
- The potential gain is 1–2 marks and would not change any meaningful outcome
- You are still within your compartment window and need to focus on exam prep instead
- You are hoping marks will simply go up — re-evaluation can also reduce marks
Before spending ₹1,300 or more on re-evaluation, take one important step: verify your percentage calculation is correct. Many students believe their marks are wrong when the issue is actually a misunderstanding of how CBSE Best of 5 percentage is calculated — especially when a Skill Subject is involved or when internal assessment marks are counted differently than expected.
- Is your Best of 5 percentage lower than you expect? Check whether the correct five subjects were used
- Did a Skill Subject like IT or AI replace a weaker compulsory subject in the calculation?
- Are your internal assessment marks included in the subject total shown on your marksheet?
- Did you receive a compartment that could be explained by the 33/100 combined threshold rule?
Re-Evaluation FAQs
No. CBSE's system requires all three stages to be completed in order. You must first apply for Verification, then for Photocopy, and only then for Re-evaluation. There is no option to skip any stage, and CBSE does not accept out-of-sequence applications.
If a marking or transfer error is found during verification, CBSE corrects your marks and issues a revised marksheet automatically. If you are satisfied with the corrected marks, you do not need to proceed to photocopy or re-evaluation. You would only continue to Step 2 or Step 3 if the correction is insufficient or if no error was found but you still believe your marks are wrong.
Yes — though it happens rarely. When a second examiner re-marks your answers, they may award fewer marks than the original examiner for certain questions. If your re-evaluation result is lower, the lower marks stand and become your official result. This is one reason why reviewing your photocopy carefully before applying for re-evaluation is so important.
No. The re-evaluation fee (₹100 per question) is refunded only if your marks increase as a result of re-evaluation. If the marks remain unchanged or decrease, the fee is forfeited. The verification and photocopy fees are non-refundable in all circumstances.
All applications — verification, photocopy, and re-evaluation — are submitted exclusively online through the CBSE official website at cbse.gov.in. There is no offline or postal application route. Payment is also made online through net banking, debit card, or credit card at the time of application.
Most schools allow provisional Class 11 admission based on your original result while re-evaluation is being processed. You should inform the admitting school about your pending re-evaluation. If your marks change after admission, the school will update your records. It is advisable not to delay Class 11 admission while waiting for re-evaluation results, as the process can take several weeks.
Check Your Percentage Before Spending on Re-Evaluation
One of the most common reasons students consider re-evaluation is confusion about their percentage — not an actual marking error. Before you apply, make sure your percentage calculation is correct using the official Best of 5 method.
